Color before words
A gradient image can give a page a quiet beginning. Light areas leave room to breathe, darker areas provide a visual center, and fine grain adds texture to smooth transitions.
Words follow the color, unfolding along the natural line width. Some paragraphs suit short, brisk sentences; some thoughts ask for a longer pause, using a longer sentence to connect what comes before and after. Headings, paragraphs and space work together to give reading its rhythm.
Leave the focus to content and the space to reading.
Another color

An illustration is a pause between paragraphs. Your eye moves from words to color, then returns to the next passage, giving the page another change of pace.
Leave some space
An article can be brief or unfold gradually. Keep related ideas together and give each paragraph a clear focus to create a comfortable space for reading.
